{"id":4362,"date":"2020-12-14T08:06:29","date_gmt":"2020-12-14T08:06:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beedigital.marketing\/?p=4362"},"modified":"2023-12-06T10:08:42","modified_gmt":"2023-12-06T10:08:42","slug":"reflections-on-technology-in-schools-in-the-time-of-covid-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/beedigital.marketing\/reflections-on-technology-in-schools-in-the-time-of-covid-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Reflections on Technology in Schools in the time of Covid: Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"4362\" class=\"elementor elementor-4362\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-159f6259 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"159f6259\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-53c2fd8d\" data-id=\"53c2fd8d\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5b457bea elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5b457bea\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<style>\/*! elementor - v3.23.0 - 05-08-2024 *\/\n.elementor-widget-text-editor.elementor-drop-cap-view-stacked .elementor-drop-cap{background-color:#69727d;color:#fff}.elementor-widget-text-editor.elementor-drop-cap-view-framed .elementor-drop-cap{color:#69727d;border:3px solid;background-color:transparent}.elementor-widget-text-editor:not(.elementor-drop-cap-view-default) .elementor-drop-cap{margin-top:8px}.elementor-widget-text-editor:not(.elementor-drop-cap-view-default) .elementor-drop-cap-letter{width:1em;height:1em}.elementor-widget-text-editor .elementor-drop-cap{float:left;text-align:center;line-height:1;font-size:50px}.elementor-widget-text-editor .elementor-drop-cap-letter{display:inline-block}<\/style>\t\t\t\t<p><b>In <a href=\"http:\/\/beedigital.marketing\/reflections-on-technology-in-schools-in-the-time-of-covid-part-1\/\">Reflections on Technology in Schools in the time of Covid Part 1<\/a>, we looked at how some technology has become or might become, a feature of school education as a result of our (post)Covid experience.<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what might we expect in the longer term?<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, \u201cexpect\u201d is perhaps too strong or too optimistic a term to use.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New technologies have to have time to prove themselves before schools en masse will be willing to adopt them.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also financial constraints and, above all, the day-to-day pressures.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What headteacher, after all, is going to fret about how blockchain might be implemented while half the students have had to be sent home to isolate and an Ofsted inspection is around the corner.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevertheless, a bit of \u201cblue sky thinking\u201d is often enjoyable, and sometimes even useful.<\/span><\/p><h2>Artificial Intelligence (AI)<\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In principle, this would be a life-saver in schools.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just in terms of the amount of new data being generated in schools because of recording new kinds of attendance (see the previous article), having a piece of code working on the data and not merely reporting but predicting likely student outcomes would enable schools to be even more proactive.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many potential <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ictineducation.org\/home-page\/artificial-intelligence-in-the-classroom\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benefits of AI in schools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ictineducation.org\/home-page\/artificial-intelligence-and-marking-pitfalls\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potential pitfalls<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but perhaps this is largely academic at the moment.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why? Because by and large, the technology is not really there yet in my opinion.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At least, it doesn\u2019t seem to be robust enough to trust it to make predictions that could affect how you provide schooling to some of your students.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides, there are issues of bias and legality too. It\u2019s no longer news to assert that many computer algorithms, far from avoiding human biases, have embedded them.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As if that wasn\u2019t bad enough, much of the time when AI comes to a conclusion, it doesn\u2019t know how it did so.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means, it cannot be challenged in any meaningful way.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imagine AI telling Student A that she doesn\u2019t have the aptitude for university, and then the school and her university choices acting on this \u201cComputer says \u2018no\u2019\u201d advice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the stipulations of the GDPR is that people have the right to question decisions made automatically by an algorithm.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add to that requirement the fact that companies regard their AI code as a closely-guarded secret, and you can see why it will be some time before AI is a major part of the education landscape.<\/span><\/p><h2>Chatbots<\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chatbots, or automated assistants, are beginning to find their way into education, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ictineducation.org\/home-page\/chatbots-in-education\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">especially HE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A well-designed chatbot in schools could be a godsend in these times.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If some of a school\u2019s admin staff are having to self-isolate, a chatbot could answer many of parents\u2019 queries and concerns.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chatbots could also assist in students\u2019 learning. For example, they could chat with a student to determine how well he has understood a concept, and record a grade accordingly.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or a chatbot could ascertain a student\u2019s needs, and then suggest online resources she would benefit from consulting.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All-in-all, the potential for <a href=\"https:\/\/botsify.com\/blog\/education-industry-chatbot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chatbots in education<\/a> seems to me to be more realisable, or realisable sooner, than that of more general AI.<\/span><\/p><h2>Blockchain<\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The potential for the education of this technology is huge.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s largely associated with cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, but it has far wider implications.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without delving into the technicalities, blockchain enables a great deal of information to be stored in a decentralised fashion such that if one part gets compromised, the information is still intact.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These \u201cnodes\u201d are linked, and conditions can be applied. For example, students\u2019 achievements can be recorded and stored in a blockchain, with accreditation (perhaps in the form of badges) being given when certain conditions are satisfied.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a student changes schools, the record of what they have already studied, and how it differs from what the new school offers, can be very easily ascertained.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the problems facing teachers who wish to make some money from the resources they develop in their own time and at their own expense is piracy.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With blockchain, it will be relatively easy to guard against that.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In Reflections on Technology in Schools in the time of Covid Part 1, we looked at how some technology has become or might become, a feature of school education as a result of our Covid experience.
